GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications Explained: What They Do, Who They’re For, and What to Know Before Starting

GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are everywhere in the news, but for many people, the information is confusing, fragmented or overly simplified.

In this first episode of a new series, PT Becky Lever aims to demystify GLP-1 weight loss drugs and talk honestly about what they do, why people take them, and why support, particularly around nutrition, muscle mass and mental wellbeing is so important.

GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs: What They Are, Why They’re Used, and What to Consider

GLP-1 weight loss medications are increasingly discussed in the media, but many people feel unsure about what they actually do, who they’re for, and what taking them really involves. In this conversation, Catriona speaks with Becky Lever, a qualified personal trainer, to explore GLP-1 drugs and the practical realities of using them particularly around nutrition, exercise, and day-to-day life.

The discussion focuses on understanding the basics, reducing confusion, and highlighting why support matters alongside medication.

Top 5 highlights from the conversation

1. GLP-1 drugs were originally developed for diabetes

Becky explains that GLP-1 medications were first created to help manage type 2 diabetes. They work by mimicking hormones involved in appetite, digestion, and blood sugar regulation. Weight loss was a secondary effect that later led to their use for obesity and weight management.

2. They reduce appetite and “food noise”

A key benefit discussed is the reduction in appetite and food noise, the constant mental focus on eating or cravings. For some people, this can feel like a relief, helping them step away from habitual or compulsive eating patterns.

3. Side effects are common, especially at the start

GLP-1s can cause side effects such as nausea, bloating, digestive upset, dizziness, and fatigue. Becky highlights that these are often more noticeable in the early stages, as doses are gradually increased and the body adjusts.

4. Muscle loss is a real risk without the right support

One of the most important points raised is the risk of losing muscle mass alongside fat. Without enough protein and resistance training, people may lose strength and energy, which can affect long-term health and mobility.

5. Many people feel under-supported

Becky shares that many clients receive little guidance beyond being prescribed the medication. This can leave people unsure about exercise, nutrition, side effects, or whether what they’re experiencing is normal and some feel uncomfortable telling friends or family they’re taking the medication at all.
